Symington Lightning

A huge lightning storm with threats of tornadoes is moving across southern Ontario right now. The rain didn't seem nearly as hard as I expected so far, but the lightning show here in Toronto was fantastic. Here's one of the photos I took from my front porch (Symington Ave., Junction Triangle, Toronto, facing north-east).

Looking through the window of one of the vacant studio spaces at Planet Storage (formerly Viceroy Rubber), Dupont St. at Dundas St. West.

Reminds me of my "Filth Trees" window photo at Tower Automotive, which I like much better than this one.

Some Conditions Apply

August 7, 2011, in the stairway going up to the West Toronto Railpath on the south side of Bloor St. "* Some Conditions Apply" stenciled over a patch of wall that was recently re-de-graffiti'd (yes, that's officially a word now). It's a constant back'n'forth game around here, as graffiti shows up on the walls, then gets sloppily painted over by the City.

I believe the "Some Conditions Apply" phrasing here is a commentary about the various states of legality / illegality, and sometimes uncertain approval processes for legalizing artwork.

Memories of Colder Times: Campbell Rink

December 11, 2010. Alex was overdue at this point, but Jen and I still got out for some quality time at the Campbell Park rink. Jen didn't actually skate this time, but did some walking and chatting with our local friends. By the end of the winter, we were able to bring Alex to the rink to experience it a bit for himself, without the confines of a belly.

With this week's heatwave, I'd love to be able to go skating at Campbell. Or at least sit my butt down on the ice.

The photo was taken with my Nikkenflex TLR camera. I'm having trouble getting photos to actually turn out, and this was one of the very few prints from the last two films that actually turned out reasonably OK. I'm itching to try some B&W developing and printing at home soon, to save on time, cost, and frustration of getting prints done.

Nevermind the 7-11, we have 8-11!

June 17, 2011. I noticed this vacant store at Bloor St. and Sterling Rd. was looking a little different when I passed by on my way home from work tonight.

The old sign for the short-lived "C-Store" had been removed, revealing a mostly-intact old "8-11 Variety Store" sign. I guess this means that someone is fixing up the building for another purpose, again. Wonder what it'll be?

According to Wikipedia, the 7-11 names comes from the original stores' operating hours, "open from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m." back in 1927. I wonder if the owners of this place slept in until 8?

Another recent tag by Kismet on the stairs up to the Railpath on the north side of Bloor St. The other one that I posted recently didn't last long, and I don't expect this one to either. The layers of paint are building up fast...

Penny Farthing on Dupont St.

April 8, 2011. I spotted this penny farthing bicycle riding on Dupont St. at Perth Ave. I saw this guy (I assume it's the same person) a couple of years ago on Campbell Ave., and someone else recently reported another sighting on Twitter. So I'm glad I had my little camera with me to get this snapshot. Next time, I hope to flag him down for a chat. I'd love to know where he got the bike, and of course I'd fancy taking this highwheeler for a spin.
