Icycle 2010: Ice bike races at Dufferin Grove Park. Here's a close-up view of a home-made studded bike tire. It's basically a regular bike tire with a bunch of metal screws stuck through it to give maximum traction on the ice. Commercially-made studded tires are nowhere near as aggressive as these!
This is the last on the ice bike photos for the blog. You can view the rest of them in my gallery posted here.

Icycle 2010: Ice bike races at Dufferin Grove Park. The "Elite Rubber Class" race at the end of the night is when people without studded tires take to the ice. Sometimes they shed their clothes and sense of decency too. Always hilarious!

Icycle 2010: Ice bike races at Dufferin Grove Park. An exciting moment in the Mens' final. The guy in blue on the right had crashed a few laps back. I thought there was no way he'd catch up again, but he managed to not only catch up to the leaders again, but he passed them and ended up winning the event.
More photos from this event are posted in my gallery.

Rick rings the final lap bell for during one of the men's heats at the Icycle 2010 races at Dufferin Grove Park on Saturday night.
As I mentioned yesterday, I will have my full photo gallery posted soon, after I take some more time to filter through all the pics.
Icycle 2010: The annual ice bike races at Dufferin Grove Park were amazingly fun again this year. I took a ton of photos, but it might take a while before I go through them all and post the gallery online. I'll probably post a few over the next few days.
Here's a teaser. The most important thing about ice bike racing: Safety First!
On Saturday Night Jen and I went down to Dufferin Grove Park (West end, Toronto) for the annual Ice Bike races on the outdoor arenas (poster). We were there mainly as spectators to watch and cheer on the racers with their home-made studded tires flying around the track. I joined in on the final "rubber class" race at the end, where lots of people piled onto the ice and did laps while trying not to fall and crash into each other (without much success!).
Some people from the Georgian Bents recumbent group came down for the races with their flashy recumbent trikes/sleds to add some more spice to it all.
What a fun night. I can't believe I missed the races last year....definitely looking forward to next year already!
Quite a few people took photos and videos of this event. Here's what I've found so far:
